Trans-Siberian Orchestra Plays Bryce Jordan Center Tonight

In what has become something of a winter holiday tradition, the prog-rock Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is making its way across the United States to the delight of millions.  Tonight (11/18), they bring their pyrotechnics to the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA at 8:00PM.

Founded in 1993 by music producer Paul O’Neill, Trans-Siberian Orchestra has released five albums with sales of over 8.5 million, and ticket sales of over 8 million on tour. Known for its Christmas albums (Christmas Eve and Other Stories (1996), The Christmas Attic (1998), The Lost Christmas Eve (2004)) the group has also released two non-Chirstmas albums that instead draw their inspiration from operatic and orchestral composers (Beethoven’s Last Night (2000) Night Castle (2009). They bring a neo-classical rock framework, complete with harmonic-minor tinged shred-guitars, and complex sequences not unlike Dream Theatre or Yngwie Malmsteen.

TSO’s line-up varies from year-to-year, and often consists of over 30 members on tour. Along with its neo-classical sound, what really has put TSO over with audiences is its elaborate light shows involving lasers, pyro, jumbo trons, and traditional concert lights all in sync with the music. Indeed, their Christmas-themed stage shows are their bread and butter with perhaps their best known songs being “Carol of the Bells” and “Wizards in Winter” (made famous by a Miller Lite commercial).

Tickets are still available for their show tonight at the Bryce Jordan Center.  They’ll also be in Philadelphia on Saturday, and Hershey, PA on Sunday.  In December they’ll be in Pittsburgh.
